The Self Employed Have Been Hit Harder Than Most By Covid

It seems that self employed people in Northern Ireland have suffered a greater impact from the Covid pandemic than most other workers, according to figures published recently. This is a very serious issue of course as it is these self employed entrepreneurs who often drive the economy, create new jobs and provide the creativity and new ideas which are so important to the country.

34% Drop In The Number Of Self Employed Workers

Statistics that the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency published show that the number of self employed people has dropped by as much as 46,000, which equates to a drop of 34%, since Covid-19 washed up on our shores, leaving just 91,000 working here.

There is no doubt that some self employed people have fallen through the gaps as it were, and not received the same amount of help and funding that others have taken advantage of, leading to some entrepreneurs deciding to give up on the idea of running their own business.

Neglecting Entrepreneurship & Failing To Address Barriers To Their Progress

In an article in the Belfast Telegraph, Tina McKenzie, who is UK deputy chair of policy and advocacy at the Federation of Small Businesses, is quoted as saying on this issue:

“For too long we have neglected entrepreneurship or failed to address barriers which stop some in our society considering starting a business, or feeling able to come forward with a big idea.

“We need to embed entrepreneurship in our education system, and create a society which celebrates its current entrepreneurs, in order to inspire those who may come after.”

She added: “The talent of our people is not in question — but we need to create the right culture and conditions to enable more people to first consider starting a business, and then help them to succeed.”

We Must Ensure A Vibrant Entrepreneurial Culture

And in the same article Professor Mark Durkin, executive dean of Ulster University Business School, said:

“Ensuring we have a vibrant entrepreneurial culture is not just important for entrepreneurs but is key for wider value creation with respect to improving living standards, achieving social outcomes, and increasing economic prosperity and possibility.”
